Our History

"The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him"

— Lamentations 3:25

Brief History of Our Parish

Delhi St. Stephen's Mar Thoma Church in Mayur Vihar is a dynamic parish that belongs to the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church in the Delhi Diocese. This church is part of a centuries-old tradition dating back to 52 AD when Apostle St. Thomas traveled to the Malabar Coast of India and established seven churches in Kerala. The early followers were known as St. Thomas Christians, and the current members are descendants of these early Christian communities.

Early Beginnings in Delhi

The history of the Mar Thoma Church in Delhi traces its origins to the 1950s, with a more substantial influx of Mar Thoma Christians arriving in the 1970s from Kerala. These early parish members were initially part of Karolbagh St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church, New Delhi Jerusalem Mar Thoma Church, and later Delhi St. Peter's Mar Thoma Church — the mother parish of Delhi St. Stephen's.

Formation and Growth

The congregation was officially formed on November 1, 2004, and elevated to the status of a church on April 15, 2005. During the early years, Holy Communion services were held at Ryan International School in Mayur Vihar Phase-III. In 2006, a LIG Flat was purchased as the Vicar's Parsonage.

Initially the parish comprised around 110 members, growing to 145 members. In 2008, land was purchased for the church complex, and the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony commenced on 12 September 2009. The church was consecrated on December 17, 2011.

Present-Day Parish

Today, the parish boasts 121 families and approximately 350 members. Over the years, eight vicars have served the church community. All official organizations, including the Karuna Charitable organization, continue to function smoothly within the parish.
